Unicorn

How can this be, in front of me
I see this beast with horn,
Horn so bright on head tonight,
The legendary Unicorn.

A thought says this just cannot be.
Insanity has set foot on me.
I blink my eyes, then realize
Her winged regal majesty.

Our thoughts entwine. I read her mind.
A great distance she has traveled,
To tell mankind, mankind so blind,
Life’s mysteries unraveled.

Men are there who do not hear.
Their only thought is greed.
To capture “horse” is their dark course.
They set about their deed.

An arrow speeds on in the dark
For wounds make easy capture.
It missed the mark. It pierced her heart.
Our royal friend does falter.

Lying down, she makes the sound
Of death. She’s overtaken.
Her message, dear, we would not hear.
Her gift to man was taken.
